Your Own Affiliate Program

Starting your own affiliate program can be a great way to increase traffic and sales. Basically it means that you set up a system, for paying other sites a commission, for helping you achieving your objectives (for example: increasing traffic or sales).

Affiliate programs should hopefully be low risk, because set-up costs aside, you are usually only paying other sites for results. You don't pay unless you get results.

There are several types of affiliate program in common use today:-

WARNING: All types of program can be at risk of affiliate fraud (some sites may attempt to cheat) - so you need to keep careful track of what's going on, and spot the fraudsters. As far as I can tell, affiliate fraud is probably more common for Pay-Per-Click programs, so in this case, be especially alert!
  • Pay-Per-Click

You pay other sites for sending visitors to you.

  • Pay-Per-Lead

You pay other sites for sending you potential customers whose details you collect. You only pay if you collect the information.

I recommend this option if you are actively seeking information like the names and e-mail addresses of prospective customers.

  • Pay-Per-Sale

You pay other sites only if you make a sale as a result of the visitor they sent.

The commissions you pay can in Pay-Per-Sale program can be:
    • A fixed amount for each sale.
    • A fixed amount for each new customer referred.
    • A percentage commission on each sale.
For a small merchant pay-per-sale is often the easiest and safest option: if you don't sell, you don't pay. I would strongly recommend that you try your best to make the commission structure for your affiliates as closely aligned to what you actually want to achieve as possible.

Each of these programs types can be implemented a number of different ways:-
  • Self Run Program

You can run the program yourself by installing scripts on your web site to do the tracking, recruiting affiliates, and writing the checks. However this can be a lot of a work, require technical skills, distract you from your main business, and you may not find it works out for you. Apart from perhaps having a struggle to find affiliates, you might also find many potential affiliates hold back because they have doubts about whether you'll track and pay commissions properly.

  • Third Party Hosted

In this case, a third party provides the tracking, issues checks and helps with recruitment. A big advantage of this approach is that you get immediate access to their existing network of affiliates.

For selling eBooks you can use ClickBank. ClickBank is really a retailer (they sell your downloadable products), however a nice feature of their system is it integrates with your web site and allows you to setup a Pay Per Sale affiliate program at no extra cost.

Summary
  • Applicable for E-Books for sale: Yes
  • Applicable for Free E-Books: Pay Per Click or Pay Per Lead Only
  • Cost: Depends
  • Tips:
    • Read starting an affiliate program
    • Affiliate success is your success - make sure affiliates have the opportunity to earn decent commissions using your program.
    • You will need to actively recruit affiliates
    • Beware of affiliate fraud - stay alert!
